Ferneyhough family history

Records not yet placed on the tree

These are people with a Ferneyhough, Fernyhough or Fernihough-type surname who turn up in records but are not yet placed on the family tree. Nothing here is a proven family link. Each entry is marked unplaced (the person or event is firm but the family is not known), probable (a likely match) or unproven (the identity is not settled). Spellings are as the record has them. Newspaper items come from search snippets, so the wording may be partial. If you recognise someone, please tell us.

Crime and prison

  • Mary Ann Fernyhough, aged 24, of Rugeley (unplaced). Tried at the Stafford Assizes in July 1849 for the wilful murder of her illegitimate newborn daughter on 12 April 1849; the body was found in a bundle in a mill-stream at Rugeley. Not guilty of murder, guilty of concealing the birth; twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour. She is not Mary Ann Harvey, wife of Thomas Scarratt Fernihough. (Criminal Registers 1849; Sun, 26 July 1849; Magnet, 30 July 1849; Aris's Birmingham Gazette, 30 July 1849.)
  • Mary Ann Fernehough, 17 (unplaced). Tried in Leicestershire on 28 June 1847; imprisonment. (Criminal Registers.)
  • Maria Ferneyhough (unplaced). Tried in Derbyshire on 20 December 1859; imprisonment. (Criminal Registers.)
  • Thomas Ferneyhough, 39 (unplaced). Staffordshire Quarter Sessions, 1844, felony, Ingestre. (Staffordshire Name Indexes.)
  • Josiah Fernyhough, 48 (unplaced). Staffordshire Quarter Sessions, 1849, felony, Fenton and Stoke-upon-Trent. He does not fit well with Josiah Fernihough of Froghall. (Staffordshire Name Indexes.)
  • Robert Fernyhough, 37 (unplaced). Staffordshire Quarter Sessions, 1849, misdemeanour, Leek. (Staffordshire Name Indexes.)
  • W. H. Ferneyhough, Newport (unproven). Listed under "Crime" in the South Wales Argus, 25 December 1948. The article is unread, so we do not know his part.
  • Thomas Herbert Ferneyhough (unproven). Listed under "Crime" in the South Wales Argus, 8 August 1936, and "Law and Justice" in the Gloucester Journal, 13 July 1940. The articles are unread, so we do not know that he was a defendant, or which Thomas Herbert it was.

Asylum registers

Sources: Staffordshire Asylums Patient Database and the UK Lunacy Patients Admission Registers on Ancestry.

  • Thos Fernihough, Stafford Asylum, admitted 5 May 1860, discharged 3 September 1860 (unproven). He could be any of three Thomases on the tree: Thomas Scarratt (aged 40), or Thomas aged 18 or 16. The Stafford register at Staffordshire Record Office would settle it.
  • Harriet Ann Fernyhough, Cheddleton Asylum, 1914 and 1915 (probable). Probably Harriet Ann Wardle, a widow of Colley Hole Farm, Ipstones, who died on 27 August 1915.
  • Joseph Fernihough, Tue Brook Villa, Liverpool, admitted 13 September 1850, died 6 December 1894 (unplaced).

Probably one woman, in Stafford Asylum in 1873 and from 1884, then Cheddleton from 19 June 1900; she died on 9 December 1915. A possible lead is Sarah Ann Fernehough, aged 10, a visitor with Frances (Oulsnam) Fernehough at Ipstones in 1861.

Records set aside while building the tree

These were left off the tree during research, usually because they appear to be a different person from the one on the tree. They are listed in date order. Where we are unsure, the entry is marked unproven, maybe or undecided.

  • Francis Fernyhough, son of Philip and Prudence, christened 2 July 1707 at Leek. They look an older couple than the Philip who married in 1742.
  • Robert Fernihough and Mary Spalton, married 1726 at Ashbourne. Possibly the Robert born in 1700 (unproven).
  • Rebeccah Fearnihough, baptised 17 June 1733 at Ipstones St Leonard, daughter of Charles and Dorothy. About 20 in February 1754, so probably the bride of John Smith, but that rests on the name alone. A different Charles from the one born in 1702 is possible.
  • Philip Fernyhough, buried 9 December 1741 at Alstonfield. Not the Philip who married in 1742.
  • Robert Fearnihough and Mary Lees, married 26 February 1744 at Ipstones. A different Robert from the one who died in 1739.
  • Ann Fernihough, buried 29 June 1767 at Trentham, no age given (maybe; Trentham is not Ipstones).
  • Josiah Fernihough Jun., christened 10 August 1776 at Madeley, son of William Fernihough Jun. Either an earlier child who died, or the true baptism of the Josiah the tree has as born in 1777 (unproven).
  • Mary Fernyhough, married James Malkin in 1790 at Stoke. One online tree gives her this marriage but a death date from Chell, so we have left it.
  • John Fernyhough, buried 15 November 1791 at Newchapel St James, "father Robt, mother Ann". A child of the Newchapel Robert and Ann family, not the John born about 1710.
  • Hannah Fernyhough, buried 20 January 1798 at Burslem. Not the Hannah on the tree, who was a Wilshaw by then.
  • Joseph Fernyhough of Ipstones, a death-duty index entry, died about 1801 (maybe).
  • Josiah Fernyhough of Stoke and Grace Pepper, married 8 July 1804 at Norton-le-Moors. Possibly a first marriage for a Josiah (unproven).
  • William Fernyhough of Ipstones, Lichfield probate 1816. Probate for a single 23-year-old is unusual, so it may be another William. The will has not been checked.
  • Mary Fernyhough, buried 19 June 1842 at Blurton St Bartholomew, aged 54 (born about 1788). Left because the Mary on the tree was at Madeley in 1841, though a Mary Ferneyhough born about 1786 at Trentham appears in 1841 (unproven).
  • John Ferinhough, 25, and Hannah, 30, of Longsdon, 1841 census, with children Ann (1) and Ellen (3 days). A different Hannah from the one on the tree.
  • William Ferneyhough, died 15 June 1846 at Trentham, born 1764. His birth is five years out from the William on the tree, born 1769 (unproven).
  • Thomas Fernihough and Elizabeth Allen, married in late 1846 at Leek. A different Thomas from the one on the tree (1782-1857). Their daughter Fanny was born in 1853 and died on 6 November 1892 at Bradnop.
  • Charlotte Fernihough, died 26 October 1847. A different woman from the Charlotte on the tree, who died in 1844.
  • Josiah Fernyhough, buried 16 July 1848 at St Dunstan, Stepney, aged 70. A different man from the Josiah on the tree, who was buried at Madeley.
  • James Fernyhough, died 2 February 1849 at Leek (Lichfield will, 1849). Not the James who died in 1859.
  • Anne Fernyhough, buried 24 May 1850 at Hanbury. Another Anne.
  • Thomas Fernihough, wheelwright, in White's 1851 Directory under Consall. Another Thomas: the one on the tree (1782-1857) was a farmer at Cheddleton Heath.
  • William Fernihough, born at Stone in 1824, at Fenton in the 1891 census. Another William.
  • Edmund John Fernihough, born late 1842 at Cheadle (Grindon), married Sarah A. Hall in 1869, and died on 27 April 1891 at Ford Mill, Grindon. A separate man from Edmond John (1830-1876) on the tree. His parents are unknown; he may be a grandson. One online tree wrongly makes him a son of James and Anne Scarratt.
  • Thomas Fernyhough, born about 1872 at Knutton or Silverdale, mother Annie Simpson. He married Alice Ann Richards on 28 December 1891 at Knutton and died in 1920 at Stoke. A different man from Theodore Thomas (died 1900).
  • Arthur Ferneyhough, born 1872, wife Martha, at Aston in 1911. Not Arthur Harvey on the tree.
  • Helen Matilda (Ferneyhough) Miles, born in Warwickshire, said by one online tree to be a daughter of Herbert and Sarah Shenton, in the 1901 Birmingham census. Rejected as a different person from Ellen Matilda on the tree.
  • John Fearnhough, born 1884 at Eccleshall, in HMP Wakefield in 1907.
  • Elizabeth Fernyhough, married John Burnett in 1884 at Wetley Rocks, perhaps the Elizabeth Burnett born about 1839-41 at Ipstones who appears in the Kingsley censuses of 1891, 1901 and 1911 (undecided: she could be the Elizabeth on the tree as a widow, or another Elizabeth).
  • Thomas Ferneyhough, born at Moseley, Yorkshire, living at Southport in 1901. His birthplace and home conflict with Thomas Herbert on the tree.
  • Winifred Fernehough, 16 (born about 1898), on a 1914 passenger list to Quebec. Not the Winifred on the tree, who was 14 and at home.
  • Herbert Fernihough, on the Swansea electoral register of 1909-10 and the Glamorgan register of 1914. A possible lead for Herbert (1847-1926) if he was ever in Glamorgan (unproven).
  • Sarah Fernihough, wife of Simon and mother of Thomas (Staffordshire, undated). A different Sarah.
  • Elizabeth Fernyhough, wife of James and mother of Edward (undated). A different woman; whether she existed needs checking.
